Vans Downtown Showdown

Vans Downtown Showdown is the best skateboarding contest there is. Normally, contests are super gay and boring. This one is different.

Invite only is the way to go. No kooks allowed. No hockey Moms. I want to hog skateboarding all the ourselves.

I don’t want to watch Jereme Rogers skate ever again. I’m fine without Kurtis Koo-koo-monkey-dook. Rodolfo Ramos is the best! (at 3 tricks). Tulio De Nobodycares. Contest suck.

Vans Downtown Showdown is tight. Typically, anything the Tampa guys are involved in is tight.

Skate or Die’s Tampa Am 2008 Results, Photos, & Videos

Skate or Die was hammertime in Tampa, Florida to witness the next generation of contest skateboarders lay down some pretty impressive lines and tricks. Tampa Am 2008 proved again that the ams are hungry as shit and looking for a paycheck. But, look it! If I may be so bold as to interject here… I’D LIKE TO SEE SOME CREATIVITY! It seems like the only progression I’m seeing here is the ability to kickflip into all the tricks we were doing 3 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far more difficult, but it’s boring already.

Ryan Decenzo took first and had his shit down. His consistency and technical ability put him easily in first place. Ben Hatchell took second and killed it. His run was by personal favorite. I missed it, but I guess he threw a blunt kickflip fakie on the big quarter. Beast. I really enjoi’d Filipe Ortiz as well. His warm-ups were amazing and if he could have locked it up in his run, I’m sure his helmet hair would have caught fire.

He was creative and he ripped and he didn’t give a shit. Lakai Fully Flared Review

The video was long, but the wait was much longer. And worth it.

UCLA’s Royce Hall was stuffed with skateboarding’s all-stars, up and comers, suits, and tag-alongs. Everybody was there and the pre-party open bar made for a nice warm up. But behind all the laughs, handshakes, and high-fives, we were all wondering the same thing: Is Lakai’s first video going to live up to all the hype? Was it worth the wait?

The lights started flashing and everyone headed to their assigned seats. Jake Phelps came out swinging and gave an awesome intro speech and expressed his affection for Lakai. The lights went out, and the video started rolling.

I won’t ruin the surprise, but you HAVE to buy this video if not for the intro alone. I swear to Lou, if you try and watch it on YouTube I’ll pop everyone of those greasy little zits on your face with my eight knuckles and film it with a tripod. It’s epic and that’s that.

After the intro, Mike Mo kills it with one of the best parts we’ve seen in awhile. Oh yeah, so does everyone else. Ty Evens is a filmmaker, not a filmer. High speed HD is incredible and abundant in this video. Jesus Fernandez is God. Guy’s part is better than best.

This is a video that will sell. If skateboard companies are all bummed on their videos not selling and YouTube costing them money, put out a video with the same production quality as Lakai’s Fully Flared and it won’t be an issue.

If I was going to be a crybaby, and I am, I could only complain about the length. The video was long. There was just too much amazing skateboarding. I’m sure I’ll love that once I have the DVD and can choose how much or how little I want to watch. But sitting down and watching some 80 minutes of anything can make a dude bored. I wouldn’t mind trading in 5 of Marc Johnson’s 15 minute part and adding it to Eric Koston’s 5 minute part either.

In the end, the video was stellar and everyone WILL buy it.
